Barbara Kane presents choreographies by Isadora Duncan, by her female students, as well as her own pieces, all inspired by ancient Greece. Early-20th-century dance engages in dialogue with the exhibits of the Archaeological Museum of Kalamata in a performance that casts new light on modern dance’s principles. Enjoy a vibrant fusion of the past and the present, modern dance and ancient art – a unique experience.

Barbara Kane
Barbara Kane discovered Duncan dance in 1968, thanks to a book by one of the great modern-dance pioneer’s adopted daughters, Irma Duncan. Barbara Kane went on to study under famous Duncan dance teachers in New York, including Lillian Rosenberg, Julia Levien, Hortense Kooluris. She was a member of Isadora Duncan Centenary Dance Company from 1976 to 1979. In 1979, Barbara Kane moved to England and in 1985 created her own dance company, Isadora Duncan Dance Group, with the support of Jetty Roels and Françoise Rageau.

Today, Barbara Kane is a pre-eminent Duncan dance teacher, having studied during her European apprenticeship, under students of Lisa and Elizabeth Duncan (Duncan’s adopted daughters, who had founded schools in Prague and Paris), and in 1990 had the honor to study in Moscow under the successors of the great dance school founded there by Isadora.
Kane’s Isadora Duncan Dance Group specializes in Duncan’s group dances, and primarily seeks to foster teamwork.

In collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Messenia.
Co-organised by Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia.

«Surrounded by a stark space that transforms in turn into a house, a catwalk, a Japanese bath, sometimes something akin to a stage set for a play by Beckett, a woman swims among her – mostly self-inflicted – misconceptions, contradictions, indecisions and deadlocks.
It is a woman of our times, suspended between intense questions and fears, but at the same time this is a very personal work. My own crisis is primarily existential, yet also social, economic, political, a crisis of values and aging.»
Maria Gorgia

Established by Maria Gorgia in London in 1996, Amalgama is credited with 20 choreographies and 18 productions in the United States and Europe, international festivals

The performance contains interaction with the audience., including the Hellenic Festival and Teatri di Vita, as well as performances in non-traditional venues. In recent years, the group has been exploring issues of identity, history and gender in a distinctive critique of the contemporary condition, placing a strong emphasis on the performers’ own creative contributions.

Drops of Peace is an outdoor performance combining dance and screenings for viewers of all ages. The choreographers Sophie Bulbulyan, Lia Haraki and Apostolia Papadamaki (France, Cyprus, Greece) created Drops of Peace as a reflection on Drops of Breath, the first underwater dance performance.

A walk in nature provides an opportunity for viewers to experience their own journey, while watching the performers conjure memories inscribed during their underwater experience. The show begins as a game that involves both performers and audience. Through this experience of exploration small choreographic compositions emerge. As the encounter with nature and the environment becomes deeper, audience and performers alike participate in a sensory game of images and movement.

A show that appeals to many senses, Drops of Peace is specifically re-created for the outdoor site where it is performed on each occasion. Performed by two Greek and three French dancers, a Cypriot dancer and a child.

Apostolia Papadamaki’s Quasi Stellar is one of the most active and multifaceted Greek dance companies. Following her extensive artistic research, the choreographer now focuses on indoors and outdoors projects, with particular emphasis on the audience’s experience and on collaborations. Drops of Peace is part of the innovative project The Underwater Heart of the Mediterranean, selected by the EU Directorate-General for Education and Culture’s programme Creative Europe (Horizon 2020) for the January 2015-May 2016 period.
